I was born and still live in Glasgow, UK, and studied ceramics at Glasgow School of Art (1993; Master of Design 1994), practising until 2005 as a professional ceramist and making domestic and decorative ware. During this time I exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions in Japan and South Korea, and received awards from the Crafts Council, British Council, Scottish Arts Council and Craft Pottery Trust.
When I decided to change medium I discovered that textiles presented me with a huge range of possibilities for expressing new ideas that I had not found when working with clay. I find it allows me much greater freedom to work through ideas rapidly, and it seems more naturally suited to my desire to be more responsive to the materials I work with. As a consequence, the work is able to take on a sense of vitality and immediacy that is central to my intentions.
I practise from my studio at Wasps (Workshop and Artist Studio Provisions Scotland) in Glasgow’s east end, making one-off and limited edition mixed media textile objects, usually based on animals. I set up my company, Nameless Wonders, in 2009, though these days also exhibit under my own name.
